2026 USC-Meiji Archaeology Workshop

We are pleased to announce that the 2026 USC-Meiji Archaeology Workshop will be held June 1-5.

The 2026 Workshop will focus on early Buddhist temples in Japan and the sixth-century Mt. Haruna eruption, which resulted in a Pompeii-like preservation of a village. Participants will explore archaeological sites, museums, and consult with local experts under the guidance of Prof. Ken Sasaki of Meiji University. Scholars and students with an interest in Japanese history, religion, or archaeology are encouraged to apply.

While there is no fee for the Workshop itself, participants should budget for hotel, transportation, and meals. Hotel reservations will be made as a group and cost approximately $250 for the four nights of the program. Domestic train tickets and transportation will be approximately $600. Participants will make their own airfare arrangements, and the first day of the Workshop will be held in Tokyo at Meiji University.
